What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive medical procedure used to treat varicose veins and spider veins, most commonly on the legs.
How it Works:
During the procedure, a special solution called a sclerosant (either liquid or foam) is injected directly into the affected vein using a very fine needle. This solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to swell, stick together, and eventually scar and close off.
Over time, the treated vein is reabsorbed by the body and fades from view. Blood flow is naturally rerouted to healthier veins.
Conditions Treated:
* Spider Veins (Telangiectasias): Tiny, web-like clusters of red or blue veins near the skin's surface.
* Small Varicose Veins (Reticular Veins): Slightly larger blue or green veins that are often the "feeder" veins for spider veins.
* Larger Varicose Veins: (refered out).
The Procedure: What to Expect
* Duration: The treatment session typically takes [Specify your duration, e.g., 30 to 60 minutes], depending on the number and size of veins being treated.
* Comfort: The procedure is generally well-tolerated and does not require general anesthesia. You may feel a slight pinprick or minor stinging/cramping as the solution is injected. Please inform us immediately if you experience significant pain.
* Technique: You will be asked to lie down, and the treatment area will be cleaned. Using very fine needles, I will carefully inject the sclerosant into the targeted veins.
* Post-Injection: The injection site will be massaged to help distribute the solution and prevent blood from remaining in the vein. A compression pad or stocking will be immediately applied.
Preparation and Aftercare
Following these guidelines is crucial for achieving the best results and minimizing complications.
Before Your Procedure:
* Avoid Lotions/Oils: Do not apply any lotion, oil, or powder to your legs on the day of your appointment.
* Shaving/Tanning: Do not shave your legs for 24 hours prior to the treatment. Avoid sun exposure/tanning for at least one week before.
* Medication: Avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), and other anti-inflammatory drugs for 5 days before and after the treatment, unless medically necessary and approved by your primary physician. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is generally safe for pain relief.
* Clothing: Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring compression stockings as instructed by me during your consultation.
After Your Procedure:
* Walking is Key: Walk for [20-30 minutes] immediately following the procedure to encourage circulation and solution dispersion.
* Compression: Wear your prescribed compression stockings continuously for 24-72 hours, and then wear them during the day for the next 7 days. Compression is vital for success.
* Activity: Resume normal daily activities immediately. Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or high-impact activity for 48 hours.
* Heat & Sun: Avoid hot baths, saunas, hot tubs, or hot compresses on the treated area for 2 weeks. Avoid direct sun exposure to the treated areas for 2 weeks to a month to prevent hyperpigmentation (dark spots).
* Pain Relief: Use acetaminophen (Tylenol) if needed for mild discomfort.
Results and Follow-Up
* When to See Results: Spider veins typically begin to fade within 3-6 weeks. Larger veins may take 3-4 months.
* Multiple Sessions: Most patients require a series of treatments for optimal results. Follow-up sessions are usually scheduled every 6 to 8 weeks to allow the treated veins to heal.
* Longevity: Veins that are successfully treated will not reappear; however, new veins may form over time, requiring future touch-up treatments.
Potential Side Effects and Risks
Sclerotherapy is a safe and common procedure, but like all medical treatments, it carries potential risks. I will discuss these with you in detail during your consultation.
